During the Civil War, citizens of Rock Island County were to be found in at least 100 regiments raised from different portions of Illinois, Iowa and Kansas. Members of the Eighth Kansas Infantry lived in Rock Island County both before and after the war. Major John Bufford was the only citizen of the county to attain this rank during the war. He opened the great battle of Gettysburgwith his splendid cavalry command. Also see 27th Infantry under Major Napoleon Buford.
